Inner-City Dallas

The neighborhoods of South Dallas, West Dallas, East Oak Cliff and South Oak Cliff are more like your typical inner-city working-class black communities with a few pleasant suprises. They boomed during the 50s and 60s for blacks, but because of forced bussing, racism, and other things they became a victim of "White Flight" Over 100,000 African Americans live in these communities. In recent years there has been promise from the city to help development on the south side and some has come to fruit. But for the most part grass roots and church organizations are working hard to bring these communities to where they should be.

Rent is very reasonable in any of these communities and if you are interested in living there I would suggest getting involved. Those of you from the Northeast or Midwest may be surprised how presentable these areas are. They are by no means "run-down" like parts of Chicago, Detroit, Philly, etc. However, many do suffer from the same economic disadvantages.
